Clifford Bridge Road work causing traffic 'chaos' according to residents

Less than a week into the second phase of the Binley Cycleway work, changes to the road layout on Clifford Bridge Road are causing traffic 'chaos' residents have told CoventryLive. The bike lane connecting Walsgrave to Binley has been under construction since July, with the second phase that has taken a section of Clifford Bridge Road down to one lane starting earlier this week (Monday, 20 October).

With traffic only permitted on this part of the road heading toward the hospital, with all other directions the subject of a diversion, residents say it is causing misery to those living in the area, but also those who need to use the route as part of their daily commute.

"The biggest impact on traffic is people coming up Clifford Bridge Road from the hospital," one resident told us. "It's blocking up during peak periods. From the hospital to the roundabout, they just can’t get onto the A46 because that’s chaos too.

"It’s backing traffic all the way up Hipswell Highway from Belgrave Road, up to the hospital and to the roundabout that joins the A46 - people are sitting in traffic for ages. In the morning and then again from about 3.45pm, people are just sitting in queues.

"People who don’t live here but have to use these roads are talking about it."

An advance notice published previously on the council's website stated: "Work will start on phase two of the Clifford Bridge Road section of the cycleway on Monday, 20 October.

"This means a southbound closure will be in place on Clifford Bridge Road between the A46 link road roundabout and the junction with Brinklow Road (near St. Bartholomew’s Church). A signed diversion will be in place for traffic towards the city centre via B4082 Walsgrave, A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass, and A428 Brandon Road. Traffic towards the hospital will be unaffected."

It concludes: "The work is expected to take up to nine months to complete. So if this is your route to work please expect your journey to take a bit more time."
