Coventry City Council has confirmed that the Transport Museum will remain in the city centre for the time being. Plans showed that it could be replaced by housing as part of regeneration project City Centre North.

Around 300 homes could be constructed on Millennium Place, where the decades-old Transport Museum is based. Officials at Coventry City Council say they are looking to 'dispose of' the site with the Transport Museum relocated.

After being approached by CoventryLive, Coventry City Council said the idea was only discussed for the UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF), which was held in Leeds in May. Leaders have now confirmed that the Transport Museum will remain in the city centre for the foreseeable future with no relocation deals agreed.

In a listing shared in the Coventry Investment Prospectus, Coventry City Council said: “It sits at the heart of the emerging City Centre North regeneration area and is currently occupied by the Coventry Transport Museum.

“Coventry City Council wishes to see the Transport Museum relocated into new purpose-built facilities and, therefore, freeing up this strategic site in the heart of the city centre.”

But in a statement to CoventryLive, Coventry City Council said of the Coventry Investment Prospectus: “It was a document used at UKREiiF, a national event aimed at unlocking investment and driving regeneration and development across the UK to accelerate economic growth.

“It is a visionary document aimed at highlighting the many possibilities for how an area of the city centre in need of regeneration could be transformed in the future. At no point has the detail of this been in front of any elected member.

“Although the potential relocation of Coventry Transport Museum has been discussed and reported on in the past, any possible change of use of the current site has never been agreed. Coventry Transport Museum is one of the jewels in our tourism offer and will remain within the city centre.”
