A Coventry Iceland remains closed to the public after environmental health issues were identified. Rats were reportedly discovered at the city branch on Binley Road.

Iceland on Binley Road currently has a five-star hygiene rating but was last inspected in February 2018. It closed around a week ago, as rodents were reportedly found in the ceiling.

Bosses said they are working to reopen the Binley Road branch 'as soon as possible' but an exact date has not yet been confirmed. Coventry City Council told CoventryLive it had contacted its Food and Safety Team.

Work is believed to be ongoing to have the rodents exterminated and the building deep-cleaned. But a Coventry City Council spokesman said they were unable to comment on the closure of the city Iceland at the time of writing.

In a statement to CoventryLive, Iceland said: “Our Binley Road store has been closed for the past week and is working with local environmental health to reopen as quickly as possible. We aim for the highest standards in all our stores, and the store has a strong food hygiene rating.”

Shoppers can visit other nearby Iceland stores while the Binley Road branch is closed. Stores can be found at West Orchards Shopping Centre, Central Six Retail Park, and Airport Retail Park.

Plans have been submitted for a Coventry Iceland store to be demolished. After major food hygiene issues were identified, the Binley Road site could be redeveloped.

Officials say demolishing the Iceland building will improve access to the nearby Lidl. It will also allow for a better configuration of the adjacent 93-space parking facility, according to Coventry City Council.

Work is expected to begin in April 2026 and be completed by June. It includes clearing the Iceland site and demolishing the building.

Hygiene issues have plagued the Binley Road Iceland in recent months, as previously reported by CoventryLive. Rats had infested the building, with contaminated food items being sold.

It was handed a one-star hygiene rating in June but has since regained a top rating from the Food Standards Agency. Reasons for the planned demolition of Iceland have yet to be disclosed.

Coventry Iceland to be bulldozed amid parking area plans for Lidl



Approval has been granted for a Coventry Iceland store to be demolished. Plans are in place to redevelop the site on Binley Road.

Part of the redevelopment will include a new car parking area for the nearby Lidl. It will also enable a better configuration of the adjacent 93-space parking facility, according to Coventry City Council.

Council approval for the plans was granted on Tuesday, February 10, paving the way for Iceland to be bulldozed. Work is scheduled to begin in April and is expected to be completed by June.

Measures to control dust and dirt emissions must be submitted to Coventry City Council before the building is demolished. Details should include the location of the jet wash and methods for preventing silt and water runoff from entering the drainage system on Binley Road.
