New apartments could be built

New apartments have been proposed on the site of a former Coventry pub.

An application has been lodged for a four-storey building with 16 apartments on the corner of Jobs Lane and Jardine Crescent in Tile Hill.

The Woodsman Pub previously occupied the site before it burned down and was closed in 2002, with the site remaining vacant after it was demolished.

Applicant Comitto Ltd has submitted a bid to build two-bed apartments.

In planning statements submitted to Coventry City Council the applicant’s agent said: “Our client proposes to provide much needed residential accommodation.

“The current market need is for two-bedroom apartments in a convenient location for access to local amenities.”

All apartments would have a lounge/kitchen area, separate bathroom, study/storage room, and a hallway.

Details submitted also state the new building will contain a communal lobby serving all 16 apartments, with a stairwell and a concierge facility.

A car park with 28 spaces and three motorcycle bays will also be provided.

Planning statements add: “It is within easy walking distance of the shops and the services within the town centre, and bus routes.

“The development offers two-bedroomed accommodation within an area characterised by three-bed family homes further enhancing the local dwelling mix.”

A full planning application was validated this month, with a consultation running until May 6 and a decision expected to be made in July.

Flats plan for land in Coventry left empty for years

New flats could go on land in Coventry left empty for over 15 years. Developers want to build a three-storey 12-apartment block on the corner of Jobs Lane and Jardine Crescent in Tile Hill.

The council earmarked the half-acre plot for homes ten years ago, according to a planning statement. But the site, made up mostly of hardstanding and some shrub, grassland and trees at its boundaries, has remained undeveloped.

It is the second attempt by developers to build the homes on the site which formerly housed a 1950s pub. Council planners threw out the scheme last year over how the flats would look.

Officers said the building would not fit with the rest of the street especially because of its "detailed design and external appearance." But documents with the new scheme claim its design will be "sympathetic to the site and surrounding environment."

Developers believe the flats will not harm the surrounding area and would actually improve its "architectural merit." They also claim they will provide "much needed residential accommodation" at an "affordable cost."

Plans show there would be six one-bedroom and six two-bedroom flats in the development. All will be market housing according to the application.

The plot off Jobs Lane was once home to the New Star Inn which was originally run by former Coventry City player George Mason. It was later rebranded as The Woodsman but closed down in 2002.

The council agreed to sell the freehold of the site two decades ago. The building had to be demolished as part of the deal.

It came after a campaign by locals and the Coventry Telegraph to demolish the "eyesore." Council meeting papers refer to the possibility of the site becoming part of a residential development next door.

But developers say the site has been empty since it was knocked down and Google Maps photos from 2008 show hardstanding where the pub once stood. Coventry council has validated the plans and the application expires at the end of June.
