A number of police officers separated Britain First and counter protesters

A number of roads were closed by police in Nuneaton as protesters marched through the town.

About 250 members of Britain First were kept apart from a similar number of counter-protesters by police as they made their way from the town's railway station to Nuneaton Justice Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Several incidents of violence broke out as police kept the two groups apart.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Council, however, said the core protests dispersed without any arrests. Warwickshire Police has been contacted for more information.

The force earlier said it had a "proportionate policing plan" in place, with protest and neighbourhood officers in the town.

Both groups of protesters started to gather outside the station from about 10:00 GMT on Sunday, prompting London Northwestern Railway to advise passengers to allow more time for their journeys.

Stagecoach Midlands said that a number of its services were cancelled or delayed throughout the day due to a number of road closures.

Arrests update after protest march and rally in Nuneaton town centre

No arrests have been made following a protest in Nuneaton town centre. A march took place from Nuneaton Train Station earlier today (March 1).

It saw a large counter protest gather opposite the entrance to the train station. Police officers swarmed not only the area around the Trent Valley Station but across the town centre itself.

Short of a minor skirmish when the march first moved off, the protesters made their way from the train station, past the old Crown Inn pub and across the road onto Bond Gate. It then moved past the former Win Wah buffet down to the corner with Wheat Street, past Warwick House and onto the Justice Walk car park.

It was there the rally was held. The march and then the rally was flanked by dozens of police officers.

There was also a big police presence in the town centre itself as the usual Saturday market was held. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has posted that the event 'passed without incident'.

In the statement, the Town Hall has said that no arrests have been made. It reads: "Today saw protests and counter protests in Nuneaton town centre.

"We are pleased the day has passed without incident, and the core protests have now concluded without any arrests made. We would like to thank market traders, residents and Warwickshire Police for their patience and support."
