The subway from Much Park Street to Short Street will be renovated
Plans have been announced to transform one of the city's neglected subways into a vibrant and inclusive public art space. Unity in Coventry launched in November 2024 to foster support, inclusivity, and collaboration within the LGBTQUIA+ community.
The community-led project will feature murals designed by local artists and community members, bringing colour and creativity to the subway connecting Much Park Street to Short Street in the city centre. The initiative are looking for designs from the community and volunteers to help apply the base paint on March 15 and 16.
Organisers said they want artists, designers, and community members to submit mural design concepts that reflect the themes of inclusivity, diversity, and unity. Submissions will be shortlisted by Unity in Coventry stakeholders, with final designs chosen by public vote, with selected murals being professionally painted.
A spokesperson for the project said: "This subway has long been a significant pathway for Coventry’s LGBTQUIA+ community, connecting our most beloved venues. Through this project, we’re brightening the space and creating something that truly represents our community’s strength, history, and inclusivity."
Community members are encouraged to participate by submitting their designs, attending workshops, and voting on the final concepts. Volunteers are also said to be welcomed to help with the painting phase of the project. Organisers added that the project will create a 'lasting cultural landmark' in Coventry, ensuring that the city's diverse voices and experiences are 'visibly' represented' in public spaces.
Dee Hodgson from Unity in Coventry added: "We are delighted to have received successful funding from the Council's Community Cohesion scheme which will enable Unity in Coventry to now transform a gloomy and rundown subway in the City Centre. We are so grateful for the support from this funding and can't wait to begin transforming the subway and creating an area that will provide a positive uplift for everyone who uses it."
Artists and community members can submit their designs via subway@unityincov.org.uk. For more information, visit the Unity in Coventry website here or contact info@unityincov.org.uk. The mural's public reveal and celebration event will be held on Friday, March 28.
