A memorial service is being held in Coventry in honour of seven soldiers who died 70 years ago as they tried to defuse a World War II bomb.

The families of the men are expected to be at the service at Whitley Common, the scene of the explosion.

The seven men, from the Royal Engineers 9th Disposal Company, died when the German bomb exploded while being unloaded.

A plaque dedicated to the soldiers was unveiled at the site two years ago.

Didn't make it to the service but took a walk over this morning. The flowers are from the Gilchrest family.

Nice gesture.

I believe there was a similar tragedy near the top of Bishop Street (now the Ring Road). I wonder if there's anything there to mark the event?
