Spon End family centre to 'gain new life' (corrected)

Neighbours in a Coventry council estate have successfully campaigned to turn a disused site into a community centre.

The Residents of Spon End (ROSE) group has been awarded a £10,000 grant to help turn the former Hill Street Family Centre into a thriving community venue.

It closed when Coventry City Council made cutbacks to its children and youth services several years ago.

ROSE said it wanted the space for pensioners' coffee mornings, pre-school activities and workshops.

A spokesman for the group said it planned to open the centre within the next three to four weeks for the 1,800 people who lived on the estate.

Uh? The Spon End estate is nowhere near Hill Street

#1 I'd never even heard of "Residents of Spon End" (ROSE) before now (The Spon End Estate Residents Association is known as SEERA) After further research it turns out to be a newly formed council-sponsored quango. So in effect the council has awarded a grant to itself. I'm unable to find evidence that any 'resident' of Spon End is involved in the running of the project in any way?
