Apparently, there has been a major incident in Nottingham...

Nottingham: Murder arrest after three killed in city

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after three people were killed in Nottingham city centre.

Two people were found dead in Ilkeston Road just after 04:00 BST.

Police were then called to Milton Street where a van had attempted to run over three people, who are currently being treated in hospital. A man was then found dead in Magdala Road.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell, from Nottinghamshire Police, said the force believed all three attacks were linked.

"This is an horrific and tragic incident which has claimed the lives of three people," she said.

"This investigation is at its early stages and a team of detectives is working to establish exactly what has happened.

"We ask the public to be patient while inquiries continue."

A number of roads in the city have been closed while investigation work takes place. These are:

Ilkeston Road
Milton Street
Magdala Road
Maples Street
Woodborough Road (from junction of Magdala Road into the city)
Maid Marian Way at the junction of Parliament Street

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, speaking at a London Tech Week event, sent his "thoughts to all those affected and to the emergency services who are responding" to the incident in Nottingham.

Alex Norris, Labour MP for Nottingham North, said on Twitter: "Awful news for our city to wake up to today.

"Our community's thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.

"Our gratitude is with our blue light responders for their work today also."

Ben Bradley, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council and MP for Mansfield, said: "The incident in Nottingham is absolutely tragic.

"My heart goes out to all those affected, and to the families of the people who have been killed.

"To see this kind of violence on our city's streets is unimaginable, and emotional for everyone who lives and works here."

Man appears in court charged with Nottingham murders

A man appeared in court on Saturday charged with three counts of murder, the BBC reported, following a stabbing and van attack in the central English city of Nottingham earlier this week which left three people dead.

Valdo Calocane, aged 31, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody by magistrates, after he spoke only to confirm his name, giving an alias of Adam Mendes, said the BBC.

He is accused of killing two university students, Barnaby Philip John Webber and Grace Sashi O'Malley-Kumar - both aged 19 -, and Ian Robert Coates, 65, who were all fatally stabbed on Tuesday.

Calocane has also been charged with three counts of attempted murder, relating to three members of the public struck by a van.

He is due to face a hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on 20 June, the BBC added.
