Fire crews tackle huge blaze at Walsgrave office and warehouse
More than 70 firefighters have been tackling a huge fire in Walsgrave which sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky. West Midlands Fire Service said the 'severe' fire broke out in the building on Olivier Way, on Cross Point business park.
The fire service received multiple calls about the incident from 5.43pm on Sunday (March 5). The first crews arrived at the scene within five minutes.
People in the area have been warned to keep doors and windows closed. The road has been closed, with crews remaining at the scene as of 8.15pm.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "At 5.43pm on Sunday (5 March), Staffordshire and West Midlands Fire Control (SWMFC) started to receive multiple 999 calls reporting a significant fire in the Walsgrave area of Coventry. The first of our crews arrived in Olivier Way five minutes after being mobilised.
"They were met with a severe fire in a two-storey office and warehouse building. Imagery sent to SWMFC by members of the public meant they were quickly able to match our response to the size and nature of the fire.
"As of 7.55pm, several fire engines and other vehicles including a hydraulic aerial platform, crewed by more than 70 firefighters, were at the scene. The road was closed for safety during our firefighting operations.
"People living or working nearby were being asked to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution."
Arsonists caused huge Coventry warehouse blaze believe fire service
A huge blaze at a Coventry warehouse and office block last night (March 5) was started deliberately, fire investigators have said. At its height, 16 fire engines and around 70 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze at Cross Point Business Park in Olivier Way, Walsgrave.
It is thought initial intelligence had led emergency services to believe people were inside the building, though that was quickly revised. The fire started at around 5.40pm and engulfed a two-storey commercial property.
The blaze was quickly brought under control and prevented from spreading to other properties in the immediate vicinity. It had been totally extinguished by around 11pm.
In a statement released this morning, West Midlands Fire Service said: "One fire engine and crew remain at the scene, checking for any remaining hotpots. Initial work by our fire investigators suggests that the fire was most likely started deliberately."
Staffordshire and West Midlands Fire Service Control was alerted to the 'significant fire' by several 999 calls. "Imagery sent to SWMFC by members of the public meant they were quickly able to match our response to the size and nature of the fire," a spokesperson had said.
Olivier Road was closed while firefighting operations took place. People living and working nearby were asked to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution until the fire had been put out safely.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area while fire crews worked with officers from West Midlands Police to ensure that people leaving a nearby cinema by car could do so safely.
