Minister warns over troubled rail line

The government is preparing to intervene if Avanti fails to deliver "significant" improvements on the West Coast Main Line, a minister has said



Avanti West Coast has been given until 1 April to improve its services following a summer reduction of trains.

Transport minister Kevin Foster said the six-month extension is a "clear opportunity" to improve its services to the standard the public expect.

But he also signalled the government could take over Avanti's network.

This would include trains from London to the West Midlands, the North West of England and Scotland, via its Operator of Last Resort.

The in-house body currently manages other services, including London North Eastern Railway.

Mr Foster told the House of Commons the government will "consider Avanti's performance while finalising a national rail contract for consideration in relation to the route alongside preparations by the Operator of Last Resort for if it becomes necessary for them to step in at the end of the extension period."

He added: "Avanti has also begun to restore services, initially focusing on the Manchester and Birmingham routes.

"From December, Avanti plans to operate 264 daily train services on weekdays - a significant step up from the circa 180 daily train services at present.

"While the company has taken positive steps to get more trains moving, it must do more to deliver certainty of service to its passengers.

"We will hold Avanti fully to account for things in its control; however, this plan is not without risk and importantly requires trade union co-operation.

"In assessing options for a longer-term contract, the Secretary of State will consider factors including outcomes for passengers, value for money, and the delivery of major projects and investments - in this case HS2, given the links they have with that future delivery model.

"Things must improve during this probation period for this contract to be further extended."

Labour MP Cat Smith, for Lancaster and Fleetwood, who secured an urgent question, asked: "When will this Government stop rewarding Avanti for failure and instead strip it of its franchise and bring the West Coast Main Line back into public ownership?"

Mr Foster replied: "The current service is unacceptable and we will look for significant improvements before April if we're to look to extend this contract any further."

Trains were axed in August to cut short-notice cancellations after a sharp decline in the number of drivers voluntarily working on rest days for extra pay.

Anger as 'failing' rail operators Avanti and CrossCountry win renewed contracts to serve Coventry



Renewed rail contracts for Avanti and CrossCountry to serve Coventry have been branded a 'disgrace'. Taiwo Owatemi, MP for Coventry North West has hit out at the Department for Transport decision.

Both firms have seen their contracts to provide rail services with the proviso that the government will be monitoring their services following concerns about repeated delays and cancellations. However, the local voice in Parliament has branded the move a 'disgrace'.

She took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to post: "It is a disgrace that Avanti and CrossCountry have been awarded new contracts. On the day Avanti was awarded their new contract, their trains out of Euston were delayed by more than 30 minutes or cancelled. We should not be rewarding failing train operators.

In a statement, Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: "The routes Avanti West Coast operate provide vital connections, and passengers must feel confident that they can rely on the services to get them where they need to be at the right time.

“Over the past year, short-term contracts were necessary to rebuild the timetable and reduce cancellations. Now Avanti are back on track, providing long-term certainty for both the operator and passengers will best ensure that improvements continue.”

It has been said that Avanti West Coast’s new National Rail Contract will have a core term of three years and a maximum possible term of nine years. The government has said that, after three years, the Transport Secretary can terminate the contract at any point with three months' notice.

The Department says it will monitor Avanti’s performance. Cross Country was given a new National Rail Contract, with a core term of four years and a maximum possible term of eight years.
