A man has been stabbed to death in a fight between a large group of men in Coventry. Two men have been arrested and will be questioned on suspicion of murder after the killing last night.

Police were called to the Jamiah Masjid & Institute at the junction of Durbar Avenue and Queen Mary’s Road in Foleshill to reports of a fight between a large group of men. Some of the men were armed with knives.

On arrival, police found two men who had been stabbed. One of the men, aged 52, had suffered 'very serious injuries' and died a short time later while a second man, 44, suffered a small stab wound.

Armed West Midlands Police officers arrested a 56-year-old man shortly afterwards and a 27-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of this morning. In addition to police, three ambulances, three paramedic officers and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene.

A large police presence remains at the scene this morning and forensic officers have been seen conducting investigations. The top of Queen Mary's Road has been cordoned off.

Det Supt Shaun Edwards, overseeing the investigation, said: “"We don’t believe this is linked to any other incidents or disputes either in Coventry or the wider West Midlands and it appears to have been an isolated dispute which has ended in tragedy. We’ll continue to work flat out to bring all of those involved to justice.

"I’d urge anyone who was in the area at the time, who may have seen or recorded what happened on a mobile phone or dashcam to get in touch with us as soon as possible. Officers are speaking with residents and community leaders to offer reassurance, and patrols in the area will be stepped up."

The institute is a community hub and registered charity. Its website says its key services include prayer facilities, funeral organisation, Islamic education and humanitarian aid.

Man killed in 'savage and brutal' incident outside city mosque is named

A man who died outside a mosque has been named online in a statement.

Haji Rab Nawaz, 52, was killed after disorder broke out at the Jamiah Masjid and Institute in Foleshill, Coventry, on Sunday night.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the fatal stabbing, but nothing could be done to save the victim. Another man, aged 44, suffered a small stab wound.

Two men, aged 27 and 56, were arrested on suspicion of murder following the brawl which erupted at around 9pm on Sunday (October 2). Detectives are continuing to question the pair, CoventryLive reports.

It is understood Mr Nawaz was from Handsworth, Birmingham.

Mohammed Nabeel Afzal Qadri, Head Imam at the Masjid, published a statement on Facebook condemning the violence, which he said had nothing to do with the mosque. He named the victim as Haji Rab Nawaz from Handsworth, who was said to be attending funeral prayers at the time of the incident.

Imam Qadri said: “It is with great sadness and distress I have to make this statement. Last night (October 2) during a funeral prayer at around 8.55pm a man by the name of Haji Rab Nawaz was viciously stabbed on Queen Marys Rd outside the mosque car park which consequently led to his death.

“He was rushed into the mosque for some sort of safety and sanctuary only for him to collapse inside the funeral area and breathe his final breaths. I speak on behalf of the mosque and local community who severely condemn this vile, despicable and callous act.

“Life of any individual is precious and sacred, For it to be lost in a moment in such a savage and brutal way is devastating. I request the local community to allow the police to carry out their investigation with ease and any person who may have witnessed the attack is urged to come forward.”

Gang jailed for more than 100 years after 'much-loved' dad stabbed through heart in Coventry

A violent armed gang have been sentenced to life in prison after a 'much-loved' father was brutally murdered in Coventry. Haji Choudhary Rab Nawaz was stabbed in the heart in a 'savage and unprovoked' attack near Durbar Avenue in Foleshill.

Brothers Adam Razaaq, Hasnian Razaaq and Hasham Razaaq and Faisal Mohammed and Jenaid Mahmood 'acted as a pack' as they plotted their murderous onslaught over a 'long-standing and ongoing' family feud, BirminghamLive reports. All five will serve a minimum jail term of over 120 years combined for their part in the fatal stabbing in October 2022.

Mr Nawaz, 52, and his brother had attended the Jamiah Masjid and Institute to pay their respects following the death of a family friend. As they left the premises, the five defendants, who wielded 'lethal' knives and an extendable baton, followed the men and subjected them to a savage and unprovoked attack, said the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Detectives said that both men were stabbed, and despite his injuries, the second man was able to drive away where the brothers retreat for safety. It is understood the horrific ordeal continued as the defendants used their weapons to attack their vehicle while continuing to threaten Mr Nawaz.

Mr Nawaz suffered serious chest injuries and died shortly after reaching the hospital, said West Midlands Police. His 44-year-old brother sustained a small stab wound but survived.

Officers said the five men fled to different parts of the country following the violence but were eventually arrested within nine days of the killing. Detectives used CCTV, mobile phone records and forensics to link them to the murder, said West Midlands Police.

Three of the defendants were his nephews while the remaining two were related to him through marriage, said the CPS. All defendants denied participation in the assaults and were convicted unanimously by the jury following the trial at Warwick Crown Court.

Sentencing, Judge Lockhart KC said: “Extraordinarily, this man was your uncle. Even more extraordinary is that you attacked as they left the mosque where they had attended funeral prayers for your extended family. None of you have shown a scrap of remorse of a tangible nature.”

Adam Razaaq, 21, of Long Lane, Halesowen, was handed a minimum term of 25 years. Faisal Mohammed, 30, of South Road, Birmingham, was told he must serve a minimum term of 27 years.

Hasnian Razaaq, 24 of Long Lane, Halesowen, was given a minimum term of 26 years. Hasham Razaaq, 23, of Long Lane, Halesowen, was handed a minimum term in jail of 25 years.

Jenaid Mahmood, 19, of Markby Road, Birmingham, was detained for life, with a minimum term of 22 years. He was also convicted of possession of an offensive weapon, which was an extendable baton, reports BirminghamLive.
