Gang jailed for more than 100 years after 'much-loved' dad stabbed through heart in Coventry
(Left) Faisal Mohammed/Top (L to R) Hasnian Razaaq and Hasham Razaaq/Bottom (L to R) Jenaid Mahmood and Adam RazaaqA violent armed gang have been sentenced to life in prison after a 'much-loved' father was brutally murdered in Coventry. Haji Choudhary Rab Nawaz was stabbed in the heart in a 'savage and unprovoked' attack near Durbar Avenue in Foleshill.
Brothers Adam Razaaq, Hasnian Razaaq and Hasham Razaaq and Faisal Mohammed and Jenaid Mahmood 'acted as a pack' as they plotted their murderous onslaught over a 'long-standing and ongoing' family feud, BirminghamLive reports. All five will serve a minimum jail term of over 120 years combined for their part in the fatal stabbing in October 2022.
Mr Nawaz, 52, and his brother had attended the Jamiah Masjid and Institute to pay their respects following the death of a family friend. As they left the premises, the five defendants, who wielded 'lethal' knives and an extendable baton, followed the men and subjected them to a savage and unprovoked attack, said the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Detectives said that both men were stabbed, and despite his injuries, the second man was able to drive away where the brothers retreat for safety. It is understood the horrific ordeal continued as the defendants used their weapons to attack their vehicle while continuing to threaten Mr Nawaz.
Mr Nawaz suffered serious chest injuries and died shortly after reaching the hospital, said West Midlands Police. His 44-year-old brother sustained a small stab wound but survived.
Officers said the five men fled to different parts of the country following the violence but were eventually arrested within nine days of the killing. Detectives used CCTV, mobile phone records and forensics to link them to the murder, said West Midlands Police.
Three of the defendants were his nephews while the remaining two were related to him through marriage, said the CPS. All defendants denied participation in the assaults and were convicted unanimously by the jury following the trial at Warwick Crown Court.
Sentencing, Judge Lockhart KC said: “Extraordinarily, this man was your uncle. Even more extraordinary is that you attacked as they left the mosque where they had attended funeral prayers for your extended family. None of you have shown a scrap of remorse of a tangible nature.”
Adam Razaaq, 21, of Long Lane, Halesowen, was handed a minimum term of 25 years. Faisal Mohammed, 30, of South Road, Birmingham, was told he must serve a minimum term of 27 years.
Hasnian Razaaq, 24 of Long Lane, Halesowen, was given a minimum term of 26 years. Hasham Razaaq, 23, of Long Lane, Halesowen, was handed a minimum term in jail of 25 years.
Jenaid Mahmood, 19, of Markby Road, Birmingham, was detained for life, with a minimum term of 22 years. He was also convicted of possession of an offensive weapon, which was an extendable baton, reports BirminghamLive.
