A £10,000 reward is being offered for information after a spate of attacks on electricity substations in Coventry.

Central Networks, which provides power supplies in central England, said 10 substations had been broken into during September with safety equipment stolen.

In August more than 40 substations were raided. The company estimates three tons of copper equipment was taken.

In one incident, a wooden power pole, carrying 11,000 volts of electricity, was cut through with an axe.

Phil Wilson, customer operations manager, said he was amazed that people risked their lives for scrap metal.

"We keep our substations locked up and fenced off and display safety signs for good reason," he said.

"Trying to steal anything from the electricity network could result in death or serious injury including horrific burns."

Anyone able to provide any information about who is committing the break-ins should call Crimestoppers: 0800 555 111.
