Rishi Sunak ‘listed in tax haven as trust beneficiary’ while chancellor

Rishi Sunak has been listed as a beneficiary of tax haven trusts while setting taxes in the UK as chancellor of the exchequer, according to documents seen by The Independent.

Trusts in the British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands, created to help manage the tax and business affairs of his wife Akshata Murty’s family interests, note Mr Sunak as a beneficiary in 2020, according to people familiar with Ms Murty’s financial affairs and evidence reviewed by this publication. Mr Sunak became chancellor in February that year, and had previously been chief secretary to the Treasury since 2019.

Documents seen by The Independent show trusts linked to Ms Murty, her family and companies linked to their businesses. In a number of them, Mr Sunak was listed as a beneficiary.

Pat McFadden, Labour’s shadow chief Treasury secretary, said Mr Sunak being listed as a beneficiary of tax haven trusts is “extremely serious” and called for answers.

He said: “We need urgent answers from the chancellor as to why he has been linked to a tax haven. We need full transparency about this and the other stories about the chancellor emerging over the past 24 hours.”

A spokesperson for Mr Sunak said they “did not recognise” the claims on use of tax havens, while a spokesperson for Ms Murty declined to comment. They previously claimed that she was a non-dom as a result of being an Indian citizen, though experts pointed out that use of the tax status was her choice.

The Treasury and Cabinet Office did not respond to requests for comment concerning Mr Sunak’s alleged beneficiary status in the British Virgin or Cayman islands trusts.

Rishi Sunak’s family moves out of Downing Street amid tax row

Rishi Sunak’s family has moved out of Downing Street in the wake of the controversy over the tax affairs of his wife, Akshata Murty.

Removal vans visited Downing Street, where the family occupies the flat above No 10, to move the Sunaks’ belongings to their home in Kensington. Sunak is expected to spend weekdays in Downing Street, while returning to his family in Kensington at weekends.

The move has fuelled speculation that Sunak wanted to remove his family from the spotlight of life in Downing Street following the furore over his wife’s tax status. However, his allies have said the move was related to wanting to be closer to their elder daughter’s primary school during her final term before moving to boarding school.

There have been reports that Sunak was considering quitting his job over the weekend over the focus on his family’s finances. “He was considering whether he could withstand his family taking this any more,” a source told the Sunday Times.

He gave an interview to the Sun last week hitting out at “smears” against his wife and criticising the focus on her tax affairs.

However, Murty released a statement on Friday saying she would in future pay UK tax on worldwide earnings from the IT firm founded by her billionaire father.

Sunak, Britain's finance minister, requests review of his financial declarations

Britain's finance minister Rishi Sunak said on Sunday he had asked Prime Minister Boris Johnson for a review to determine whether he had stuck to the rules on ministerial declarations following criticism over his family's financial arrangements.

Sunak said he had written to the prime minister asking him to refer Sunak's ministerial declarations to Christopher Geidt, the independent adviser on ministers' interests.

"I have always followed the rules and I hope such a review will provide further clarity," Sunak said on Twitter.

Sunak has endured a torrid week in which a substantial increase in taxes came into effect as the tax arrangements of his family also came under scrutiny, and the Sunday Times reported he considered resigning.

His wife, Akshata Murty, owns about 0.9% of Indian IT giant Infosys (INFY.NS), and has confirmed that she had non-domiciled tax status, meaning she did not pay tax on earnings from outside Britain.

While the status was legal, critics said the arrangement was incompatible with Sunak's decision to raise taxes on workers and employers from April 6 at a time when high inflation is causing a cost-of-living squeeze for many households. On Friday she said she would pay British tax on foreign income.

A newspaper report said that Sunak was listed as a beneficiary of offshore trusts linked to his wife's family business interests, while on Friday he confirmed he only gave up a "green card" for the United States - an immigration status intended for permanent U.S. residents - after he became Britain's finance minister in 2020.

"I am confident that such a review of my declarations will find all relevant information was appropriately declared," Sunak said in the letter.

Geidt, who will lead the review, last year cleared Prime Minister Boris Johnson of a conflict of interest over the refurbishment of his official residence in an report that said the prime minister acted "unwisely" but had not broken the ministerial code.

The end may well be nigh!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
