Sainsbury's is to axe 300 jobs across its support store centres as part of plans to outsource the roles. Workers at its central offices in Ansty in Warwickshire as well as in Manchester and London are set to be affected by the shock move.

Hundreds of staff working in food, commercial and finance operations as well as people services and HR are in line to lose their jobs as Sainsbury's outsources the roles to Accenture, reports BusinessLive. However, the supermarket giant has said they are currently unable to confirm how many jobs will be lost in each centre as they 'cannot pre-empt the consultation process.'

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “We are focused on our plans to put food back at the heart of Sainsbury’s. To achieve this, we are becoming a more simple, nimble and efficient business so that we can reinvest in what matters most to customers – low prices, exciting new products and convenient ways to shop.

“We are talking to a small proportion of our store support centre colleagues about some changes we are proposing to the way we work. Colleagues affected will enter into a consultation process and we are supporting them through this in any way we can.

"This includes exploring alternative roles within Sainsbury’s, as well as providing independent support with job opportunities elsewhere as part of a redundancy package which far exceeds statutory requirements.”

It comes after the supermarket giant put around 2,000 jobs at risk at the start of March because of its plans to shut 200 in-store cafes. Sainsbury's also confirmed it was launching consultations with an undisclosed number of staff regarding plans to close less popular hot food counters in 34 stores and changes to how it runs bakeries in 54 stores.

Its decision to close the cafes is a part of a wider move to transform its dining, takeaway and home delivery food and drink offers from stores. Plans are also in place to open 30 more restaurant hubs in stores in partnership with Boparan Restaurant Group (BRG), which runs the Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Slim Chickens brands.

Further plans include opening 30 Starbucks sites across its supermarkets, as it seeks to overhaul its offer across 250 stores over the next three years. In April last year, Sainsbury's said 1,200 jobs were at risk from plans to stop baking products in some stores, while it cut around 3,500 jobs due to the closure of fresh meat and fish counters in November 2020.

Aldi has announced it has more than 200 jobs up for grabs across the region this year as it begins a new recruitment drive. The supermarket giant is looking to employ skilled workers to fill up roles across its stores in Warwickshire.

People of all levels of experience can apply with full-time positions such as Store Assistant, Caretaker and Deputy Manager roles, with salaries up to £63,245 per annum. The Aldi stores looking to hire include Stratford upon Avon, Nuneaton, and Atherstone with a total of 209 jobs going.

The recruitment is part of Aldi’s nationwide expansion drive, as the supermarket creates more than 2,000 new jobs across the country adding to the 7,000 permanent roles already created over the past two years. Kelly Stokes, Recruitment Director at Aldi UK, said: “As we continue to grow and make Aldi accessible to even more shoppers this year, we need thousands more amazing colleagues across the country to make that possible.

“That includes job roles at current and new stores across Warwickshire. Our colleagues are central to everything we do at Aldi and remain one of the key factors in our success, so we look forward to welcoming even more great people to the team to become a part of our success.”

I can't help thinking there's some sort of connection between those two stories?
