Coventry residents have been hit with a council tax rise of almost 3% from today, Friday April 1, as the cost of living soars across the country. Coventry Confidential, a local campaigning group, has accused the council of 'failing residents' and branded councillors 'a bunch of clowns.'

Protesters claim Coventry City Council has spent 'over £2.8 million' during the ongoing bin strike dispute which has caused significant disruption to residents' bin collections since January. Coventry Confidential staged a demonstration outside the Council House yesterday (March 30).

Dressed as clowns, they held a sign that said: 'Councillors WASTING £2.8 million on bin strike. A RUBBISH JOKE.' More than 500 residents are said to have raised issues of concern over problems within the city including fly-tipping, potholes and the needs of developers being prioritised over residents.

Coventry resident Richard Milner branded the council tax rise a 'sick joke' amid a cost of living crisis across the UK. He said: "Council tax is going up on April Fools Day. If you live in Coventry it's a reminder that our Labour Councillors are a bunch of clowns.

"Coventry Councillors are wasting over £2.8 million of taxpayers' money in an attempt to break the bin strike when it would only cost £300k to solve. It's a sick joke when council tax is going up in the middle of a cost of living crisis. But is not just the bin strike, there's fly-tipping and potholes all over the city.

Richard added: "We've knocked on thousands of doors and people we speak to think they aren't getting a proper service from the council. Council tax should be cut not raised. It's time for Coventry Councillors to stop failing residents."

With the money that CCC have in reserves, I do think they could have absorbed this year's increment.

But the real issue is that many jobs within CCC (like other councils) are overpaid, waste is rife, and we are saddled with a sad sack of councillors, most of whom would struggle to tie their own shoelaces never mind run a multi-million-pound corporation.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
