What was a described as "some sort of fireworks display" over five minutes took place at around 1am

People in parts of Coventry were awoken by loud explosions that are thought to have been fireworks through the night.

For around five minutes at about 1am on Monday (6 September), many residents across Aldermans Green, Longford, Holbrooks and other nearby areas were awoken by the noise, with many taking to social media in a bid to find out what it was about.

With no on obvious explanation, people were quick to complain about the inconvenience of being awoken in the middle of the night, with many pointing out the fact children return to school today after the summer holidays.

Though there are certain times throughout the year we expect fireworks into the night, Bonfire Night, Diwali, New Year's Eve, to name a few, there did not seem to be an obvious explanation for a display at the the beginning of September.

One resident in Aldermans Green told CoventryLive: "It was really loud - woke up the whole house, including the kids. I tried to figure out what it was.

"I thought maybe kids messing about but It didn't make sense as that would just be one or two bangs. This was over five or ten minutes and felt more like some sort of fireworks display."

Today is the start of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which this year runs from 6 - 8 September - although it is not thought the celebrations are linked to it.

I'd hardly call five minutes "through the night".
