Fire and ambulance crews were called to Lyndale Road near its junction with Wildcroft Road about 0520 BST.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced their way into the second floor flat in the three-storey block and rescued him.

The man was suffering from breathing in smoke and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, an ambulance service spokeswoman said.
