



Arson arrest after Coventry tower block blaze
A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire in a Coventry tower block.
The emergency services were called to Thomas King House on Wellington Street, Hillfields, after a blaze broke out on the 14th floor of the 17-storey tower block.
A large number of crews from the fire service were called to extinguish the blaze, while residents from the building's 128 flats were evacuated.
It has been confirmed that there were no serious injuries to anyone in the building as a result of the fire, which broke out at around 9.30pm last night (Friday, September 11).
This morning, West Midlands Police confirmed that they have arrested a man on suspicion of arson in connection with the incident, which took place in the Hillfields area of the city.
The 23-year-old remains in police custody at this time (Saturday, September 12).
Police are continuing to investigate, and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Coventry tower block fire: Arson accused appears in court
A man has appeared in court charged with arson after a large fire spread across a Coventry tower block.
Abdu Aden is accused of two counts of arson with intent/recklessness to endanger life.
The 23-year-old, of Wellington Street, Coventry, has also been charged with one count of possession of a bladed article.
He appeared via a virtual hearing at Coventry Magistrates Court today (Monday, September 14).
Aden did not enter pleas and the case was sent onwards to Warwick Crown Court.
He was remanded in custody ahead of the next hearing on October 12.

Police have released the mugshot of Abdu Aden who was jailed this week for starting a blaze at a Coventry tower block.
The 23-year-old has started a five-year prison sentence after admitting he was responsible for the fire at Thomas King House in Hillfields, which could be seen across the city skyline.
And once he's finished his jail term, Aden will be deported after Judge Anthony Potter handed down an automatic deportation order at the sentencing hearing at Warwick Crown Court on Wednesday (January 20).
Aden, of Wellington Street, Hillfields, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of arson with intent or being recklessness as to whether endanger life. He also admitted a further charge of possession of a bladed article.
The fire began on the 14th floor of Thomas King House, in Wellington Street, at around 9pm on September 11 last year.
The flames could be seen for miles around while around 40 firefighters tackled the blaze, which led to residents across three floors being evacuated while the flames burned.
