The cheapest petrol stations in Coventry as prices fall across city

Image

Petrol prices have plummeted at forecourts across Coventry handing beleaguered motorists a much-needed pre-Christmas boost. According to website pretrolprices.com, unleaded is now available in the city for less than £1.40p per litre.

It's the first time the price of unleaded has dipped that low since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February and comes on the back of a huge drop in wholesale prices.

Yet motoring group RAC says drivers should be seeing an even bigger drop in filling up fares in line with the spiralling wholesale prices. RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams told The Express said: "There is yet more pressure on the biggest fuel retailers today to pass on savings to drivers as the price of oil has dipped below $80 for the first time since the start of the year causing the wholesale cost of petrol to tumble to 105p a litre and diesel to 119p.

"If a cut of at least 10p a litre doesn’t come soon it will be yet more evidence of ‘rocket and feather’ pricing for the Competition and Markets Authority to take note of. The disparity between average pump prices, at 158p for petrol and 182p for diesel, and their wholesale equivalents is truly shocking.

"Even taking account of major retailers’ buying cycles, we can see no justification for them not cutting their prices significantly. This failure to reflect falling wholesale costs over multiple weeks at the pumps is totally unreasonable.

"Whenever you have smaller, independent forecourts charging far less than the big four supermarkets, which buy far larger quantities of fuel on a far more frequent basis, it has to be a cause for major concern."

That is certainly the situation in and around Coventry where a Texaco petrol station is undercutting the likes of Asda, Sainsbury's Morrison's and Tesco with their latest price. However, it's member-only Costco that leads the way in Coventry.

The retailer has today slashed its prices to 'just' 136.9p per litre. The Texaco in Sandits Lane, Keresley Heath, is 10p a litre more expensive on 146.9p while the Esso in Coventry Road, Exhall, is third on 148.9p.

Here's a list of the ten cheapest forecourts for unleaded in and close to the city.

    1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 136.9p per litre (as at 14/12/22)

    2, Texaco, Sandits Lane, Keresley Heath - 146.9p (as at 13/12/22)

Coventry's cheapest petrol stations as big price fall forecast

Image

Petrol, diesel and super unleaded prices should fall sharply in the coming days and weeks, it has been claimed. Prices at the pump have dropped a little in weeks, but they haven't mirrored the huge reductions seen in wholesale costs.

But Paul Holland, MD of UK Fleet at Allstar, a leading provider of fuel cards and electric vehicle solutions, believes the market might just be at a welcome tipping point for cash-strapped motorists in Coventry and Warwickshire.

"With an elimination of Russian oil and increasing demand across the globe, the genuine concern over availability and supply of oil has now been replaced by a realisation that the globe is simply not going to need as much oil in the short and medium term," he told The Express.

"Right now, we’re seeing the market agreeing with this assertion that supply is going to outstrip demand. The impact is that oil prices are now around 60 per cent of what they were in June of this year; $120 (£99.65) at its highest level compared to $75 (£62.28) in the last week or so.

"While retail pump prices are yet to see the full benefit of this commodity cost fall, this will almost certainly come over the next few weeks and as we move into the new year." On average, drivers are seeing petrol prices at 152.18p per litre though diesel remains higher than super unleaded (168.95p) at almost £1.75.

According to the website petrolprices.com, charges have slowly been dropping in our area too. Here's a list of the nine cheapest forecourts for unleaded in and close to the city.

    1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 136.9p per litre (as at 02/1/23)

    2, Morrisons, Skipworth Road, Binley - 144.7p (as at 1/1/23)

    3, BP, Brandon Road, Binley - 145.9p (as at 1/1/23)

    4=, Sainsbury's, Austin Drive, Courthouse Green - 146.9p (as at 31/12/23)

    4=, Texaco, Sandits Lane, Keresley Heath - 146.9p (as at 26/12/22)

    4=, Esso, Coventry Road, Exhall - 146.9p (as at 31/12/22)

    7=, Morrisons , Holyhead Road, Spon End - 150.7p (as at 13/12/22)

    7=, Asda, London Road, Whitley - 150.7p (as at 13/12/22)

    7=, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 150.7p (as at 9/12/22)

Full list of Coventry's cheapest petrol stations as prices start to climb

Image

The cost of petrol is slowly beginning to climb across Coventry after a sustained period of price drops. The worrying news comes just days after Shell announced £32.2 billion post-tax profits for 2022, the highest in the company's 115-year history.

The fuel and energy giant has gained more than most from soaring petrol prices since Russian's senseless invasion of Ukraine little more than a year ago. But Shell is by no means the only company to have profited from last year's huge price spike which peaked in the summer when the UK average for unleaded reached around £1.91 per litre.

Howard Cox, founder of FairFuelUK, which has long called for a regulator to keep closer tabs on the industry, reckons prices are 'artificially high' by as much as 20p per litre due to retailers' refusal to pass on to hard-up motorists decreases in wholesale costs. He said: "The Government must act now and introduce our well-thought-out opportunistic profiteering watchdog proposal PumpWatch.

"It will at last check the big branded oil corporations' greedy manipulation of pump prices. Pump Prices are still 10p-20p per litre artificially high and contribute big time to Shell’s UK profits. These odious levels of record income generation are immoral.

"They only benefit already well off individuals and pension funds and of course the Treasury, which is wallowing in record VAT receipts because of the last two years inflated punitive filling up costs. In a time of insecure energy supplies and volatile prices, the unpredictable and uncontrolled fuel market is manna from heaven allowing these greedy business to ride roughshod over drivers suffering under the worst cost of living crisis in decades.

"Oil is down nearly 50% since the Ukraine invasion, yet Shell and the other big oil corporations continue to pay record dividends to shareholders on the back of tens of thousands dying in a futile war." After many months of gradual reductions, the price of petrol in Coventry has stalled and actually appears to be moving back up again.

According to data from petrolprices.com, the cheapest station in the city is actually 1p per litre more expensive than it was towards the end of January. And there have been small increases at most of the city's other cheaper forecourts.

These are the nine cheapest forecourts in Coventry:

    1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 138.9p per litre (as at 3/2/23) (members only)

    2, Gulf, Dunchurch Highway, Allesley - 141.7p (as at 1/2/23)

    3, Sainsbury's, Herald Way, Canley - 141.9p (as at 1/2/23)

    3=, Tesco, Phoenix Way, Rowley's Green - 141.9p (as at 2/2/23)

    3=, Tesco, Lynchgate Road, Cannon Park - 141.9p (as at 1/2/23)

    3=, Tesco, Clifford Bridge Road, Walsgrave - 141.9p (as at 1/2/23)

    7=, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 142.7p (as at 1/2/23)

    8=, Sainsbury's, Austin Drive, Courthouse Green, 142.9p (as at 2/2/23)

    8=, Texaco, Sandpits Lane, Keresley, 142.9p (as at 1/2/23)

Motorist fury over diesel price warning as Coventry pays up to 26p more than petrol

Image

Diesel drivers have been warned by motoring groups that they’re paying massively over the odds for fuel on petrol forecourts. The RAC spoke out saying that on average people who have diesel engines are being charged 17p more per litre - even though the wholesale price for both fuels is the same.

According to RAC Fuel Watch, the average price of a litre of petrol is 146.63p while diesel is priced at 164.26p typically. Both fuels are selling for around 114.5p on the wholesale market, the RAC said. In Coventry the biggest price difference according to petrolprices.com is about 26p (see table below).

Motorists have reacted angrily. On Twitter Chris Smith said: “Diesel pricing has always been a ripoff. The fuel retailers realised they could steal the benefit of the lower fuel consumption of diesel cars from the motorist.”

M3rcury added: “Not to mention, that diesel is cheaper to produce than other petrols and should therefore, be CHEAPER anyway!” Sean Mathews Official demanded: “Absolutely criminal @ofgem should be stepping in and fining all these companies. Daylight robbery.”

Roy Miller wrote: “I was in Spain last Month Diesel €1.54 litre Petrol €1.57 litre Yes that’s right just like it used to be in the UK Petrol dearer than diesel. rip off UK.”

In Coventry, according to petrolprices.com, there is a big disparity even in the cheapest five garages:

  • COSTCO Coventry Automat, Torrington Avenue CV4 9AQ - Petrol 136.9p, Diesel 149.9p (Updated 29/3)
  • Morrisons Binley, Skipworth Road, CV3 2XA - Petrol 140.7p, Diesel 160.7p (Updated 27/3)
  • BP RSS Woodway, Hinckley Road, CV2 2EU - Petrol 140.7p, Diesel 166.9p (Updated 23/3)
  • ASDA Coventry Automat Brade Drive, CV2 2BN - Petrol 140.7pm, Diesel 164.7p (Updated 24/3)
  • TESCO Coventry Walsgrave, Clifford Bridge Road, CV2 2TS - Petrol 140.9p, Diesel 160.9p (Updated 28/3)
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “The forecourt price disparity between petrol and diesel across the UK is absolutely shocking given their wholesale prices are now virtually identical. At the beginning of March, wholesale diesel was only 6p more expensive than petrol yet there was a 20p-a-litre gap between both fuels on the forecourt.

“Now the two fuels are identical on the wholesale market, and there’s still more than 17p difference at the pump.” Mr Williams added: “Considering supermarket prices are usually around 4p cheaper than the UK average, their customers should have been seeing prices under 150p weeks ago.

“We are also seeing many independent retailers charging far less than their supermarket rivals which is a sign of how much fuel retailing has changed. This would have been pretty unusual several years ago but is now rapidly becoming the norm.”

The RAC also highlighted membership-only chain Costco as bucking the trend, by charging just under 150p a litre for diesel.

The cheapest petrol stations in Coventry as prices continue to fall...

Image

The Bank of England is set to raise the interest rate once again this week in a bid to drive down inflation. The bank is eager to keep a lid on things amid reports two-year fixed-rate mortgages have now topped six per cent for the first time this year.

And while things still aren't looking especially rosy for borrowers and homeowners, motorists are at least seeing some respite in the never-ending cost of living crunch. Petrol prices across Coventry have followed the national trend in falling to far more acceptable values after last summer's peak.

At one point, around 12 months ago, drivers were forking out close to 191p for a litre of unleaded. Thankfully, rates have steadily dropped to where we are today, which is roughly where we were prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In the most recent monthly report by the AA unleaded prices fell from 146.9p per litre to 144.7p per litre. And diesel prices had enjoyed an even bigger drop from 161.1p per litre to 153.9p per litre.

The average price difference between diesel and unleaded shrunk to 9.2p per litre. According to petrolprices.com, these are the eight cheapest forecourts for unleaded in and around Coventry :

    1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 131.9p per litre (as at 18/6/23) (members only)

    2, Gulf, Dunchurch Highway, Allesley - 136.7p (as at 15/6/23)

    3, Holyhead Road Service Station, Holyhead Road - 136.8p (as at 17/7/23)

    4=, Morrisons, Holyhead Road, Spon End, 137.7p (as at 15/6/23)

    4=, Asda, London Road, Abbey Park - 137.7p (as at 17/6/23)

    6=, Sainsbury's,, Herald Way, Canley - 137.9p (as at 18/6/23)

    7=, Morrisons, Skipworth Road, Binley - 139.7p (as at 17/6/23)

    7=, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 139.7p (as at 17/6/23)

Coventry's 11 cheapest petrol stations as unleaded prices rise

Image

After many months of steady decline petrol prices are making an unpopular U-turn. The cost of filling up is back on the up, just when other parts of average household expenditure were enjoying a minor cost of living respite.

The average price of petrol in the UK rose in July for the second consecutive month according to data from RAC Fuel Watch. The motoring group's research shows that a litre of unleaded petrol now costs 145p, up by a penny since the start of the month and nearly 2p higher compared to the beginning of June.

The wholesale price of petrol increased by 6p a litre from July 19, prompting retailers to pass the cost on to drivers. In contrast, average diesel prices have remained stable at 146p, ending eight months of falling prices. Filling a family car with 55 litres now costs around £80 for either fuel – £80.21 for diesel and £79.75 for petrol.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: "July marks a turning point in the year for fuel prices as diesel stopped falling while petrol recorded its second consecutive monthly increase. But more concerning is the fact that oil has gone back up to $85 (£66.8) a barrel, causing wholesale prices to rise significantly.

"While we’re fortunately not in the kind of upward price spiral we experienced last year, it feels like the better times at the pump are over for the time being. If oil producers continue to curb production then bigger forecourt price rises could be on the cards."

The new data arrived hours before Asda announced it would be the first UK supermarket to publish its fuel prices online ahead of a scheme being developed to force all retailers to advertise live prices. The supermarket said it would publish pump prices at each of its stations to enable people "to find the best value".

All petrol retailers are working with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to set up a scheme to allow people to compare live fuel prices online. An investigation by the watchdog found supermarkets, known usually to have cheaper fuel prices, had sought to increase profits from selling fuel, increasing their margins by 6p per litre on average between 2019 and 2022.

Mr Williams welcomed Asda's move, but said he didn't believe it would make a difference to prices. "Real competition is the key, and this is something we are sadly lacking at the moment," he told the BBC.

According to petrolprices.com, these are the 11 cheapest forecourts for unleaded in and around Coventry.

    1, Costco, Torrington Avenue, Canley - 135.9p per litre (as at 2/8/23) (members only)

    2, Gulf, Dunchurch Highway, Allesley - 138.7p (as at 2/8/23)

    3, Holyhead Road Service Station, Holyhead Road - 138.9p (as at 2/8/23)

    4=, Morrisons, Holyhead Road, Spon End - 139.7p (as at 2/8/23)

    4=, Asda, Brade Drive, Walsgrave - 139.7p (as at 2/8/23)

    6=, Sainsbury's, Herald Way, Canley - 139.9p (as at 3/8/23)

    6=, Texaco, Sandpits Lane, Keresley - 139.9p (as at 1/8/23)

    8=, Asda, London Road, Abbey Park - 140.7p (as at 2/8/23)

    8=, Morrisons, Skipworth Road, Binley - 140.7p (as at 2/8/23)

    10=, Tesco, Lynchgate Road, Cannon Park - 140.9p (as at 2/8/23)

    10=, Tesco, Phoenix Way, Rowley's Green - 140.9p (as at 3/8/23)

The petrol station was deserted on Friday night whereas the local car park is full, so I assume no one is going away this weekend? :roll:
