Coventry's 11 cheapest petrol stations as unleaded prices riseAfter many months of steady decline petrol prices are making an unpopular U-turn. The cost of filling up is back on the up, just when other parts of average household expenditure were enjoying a minor cost of living respite.
The average price of petrol in the UK rose in July for the second consecutive month according to data from RAC Fuel Watch. The motoring group's research shows that a litre of unleaded petrol now costs 145p, up by a penny since the start of the month and nearly 2p higher compared to the beginning of June.
The wholesale price of petrol increased by 6p a litre from July 19, prompting retailers to pass the cost on to drivers. In contrast, average diesel prices have remained stable at 146p, ending eight months of falling prices. Filling a family car with 55 litres now costs around £80 for either fuel – £80.21 for diesel and £79.75 for petrol.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: "July marks a turning point in the year for fuel prices as diesel stopped falling while petrol recorded its second consecutive monthly increase. But more concerning is the fact that oil has gone back up to $85 (£66.8) a barrel, causing wholesale prices to rise significantly.
"While we’re fortunately not in the kind of upward price spiral we experienced last year, it feels like the better times at the pump are over for the time being. If oil producers continue to curb production then bigger forecourt price rises could be on the cards."
The new data arrived hours before Asda announced it would be the first UK supermarket to publish its fuel prices online ahead of a scheme being developed to force all retailers to advertise live prices. The supermarket said it would publish pump prices at each of its stations to enable people "to find the best value".
All petrol retailers are working with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to set up a scheme to allow people to compare live fuel prices online. An investigation by the watchdog found supermarkets, known usually to have cheaper fuel prices, had sought to increase profits from selling fuel, increasing their margins by 6p per litre on average between 2019 and 2022.
Mr Williams welcomed Asda's move, but said he didn't believe it would make a difference to prices. "Real competition is the key, and this is something we are sadly lacking at the moment," he told the BBC.
