What happened when Nuneaton and Bedworth town centres were under 96 hour police orderThe results of a 96 hour long police order across Nuneaton and Bedworth town centres have been revealed. The local policing team took the action to bring the rarely used powers into force.
At the time, it was said that this was to 'protect the community'. Initially the whole of Nuneaton town centre, including up to the Asda store and across to Riversley Park, was put under a 48 hour long order.
But then this was extended for another 48 hours to include Bedworth town centre. This extended order came to an end at 6pm last night (February 23).
The order gave police the powers to move on groups of trouble makers with the warning that if they returned, they could face arrest.
It has been confirmed to CoventryLive that five youths, who cannot be identified, were given a direction to leave using dispersal powers on Saturday night (February 21) following the dispersal order being reinstated.
No-one breached the direction to leave and no arrests were made.
In a statement, Nuneaton and Bedworth Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Ryan Walker explained why the dispersal order was put into place.
"During school half term, we knew there would be more young people out and about with the potential for a rise in anti-social behaviour (ASB)," Inspector Walker said.
“We want everyone to be able go about their business, so to avoid this, and as part of our community engagement activity, we have a range of powers we can use as and when needed.
“Our key police power here is a dispersal order, which we use where necessary. This gives us powers to order someone to leave the area for a set time period. If they refuse to leave or if they try to come back in that period, we arrest them.
“Where we see criminal behaviour in young people we work with our partner agencies to address it. This often initially involves joint police and key partner visits to parents and guardians.”
