Split holds onto the top spot at US Box Office

M Night Shyamalan’s Split has grasped on to the top spot at the US Box Office for the second week running, earning more than $26 million after its massive $40 million opening weekend.

The film follows the many, many personalities of lead actor James McAvoy, and has held steady at the box office, fighting off all the competition.

Following closely behind, A Dog’s Purpose debuted in the number two spot taking $18.4 million despite controversy around the filming practices.

An undercover video was released of a dog in distress while filming water scenes, leading to PETA calling for movie-goers to boycott the film.

Hidden Figures, the story of three African-American women’s roles in the American space programme kept its spot at number three with another $14 million this week, while Resident Evil: The Final Chapter debuted in the fourth spot just behind with $13.9 million.

Rounding out the top 5 was Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning La La Land, which remained in the fifth spot after taking another $12 million at the box office after eight weeks in theatres.

Vin Diesel’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage slipped from its debut at number two down to number six in its second week in theatres, while animated movie Sing, starring Reese Witherspoon, is at number seven.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is continuing in its billion dollar global box office ways by staying in the top ten at number eight, while Monster Trucks is at number nine.

And rounding out the top ten is new entry Gold, Matthew McConaughey’s new drama which follows a mining company struggling to stay afloat.
