‘Warm Bodies’ takes number one spot at US box office

Warm Bodies has debuted at the number one spot in the US box office.

The zombie rom-com, starring Nicholas Hoult as a zombie and Teresa Palmer as a human, took in $19.5m over the weekend, earning a total gross of $20m in its first week.

Warm Bodies knocked down last weekend’s number one film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters to second place with $9.2m, earning a total gross of $34.4m.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is a retelling of the Brothers Grimm’s fairytale Hansel and Gretel, in which the title characters grow up to be witch hunters (Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton).

Warm Bodies also beat out Sylvester Stallone’s new action release Bullet to the Head for the top spot. The film debuted at sixth place with $4.5m.

Meanwhile, two films starring Jessica Chastain are still in the top ten – Mama and Zero Dark Thirty.

Mama slipped from second place to fourth place with $6.7m, earning a total gross of $58.2m, followed by Zero Dark Thirty in fifth place with $5.3m. Its total gross is $77.7m.

Both Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln climbed up one spot from their previous place.

Last weekend’s fourth place Silver Linings Playbook took the third place with $8.1m, taking its total gross to $80.3m. Lincoln, on the other hand, moved from its 11th spot to ten with $2.4m. Its total gross is $170.7m.

Parker, Django Unchained and Les Misérables round out the top ten.
