The Possession has debuted at number one on the US box office.
The horror film, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick, opened with weekend sales of $17.7 million, pushing The Expendables 2 out of its two-week run at the top to number three with $8.8 million.
Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy’s latest gangster drama Lawless was able to debut at number two, earning $9.6 million in ticket sales.
The Bourne Legacy fell two spots to number four, taking in a further $7.2 million and bringing its current total gross up to $96 million.
Fairing less well is The Campaign, Will Ferrell’s political comedy that saw a huge dip from number four to number eight this week with $5.4 million.
Meanwhile, Meryl Streep’s romantic comedy Hope Spring holds on with $4.7 million at the number ten spot.
