‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ announced for May 2014 release

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel has been given a title and release date.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will arrive in cinemas on May 23, 2014, 20th Century Fox has revealed.

The film recently hired Contagion writer Scott Z Burns to work on a new draft of the script, which charts the continued ascension of the primates.

The first draft was penned by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

Andy Serkis, who played Caesar in the first film, has signed on for the sequel. Director Rupert Wyatt is also expected to return.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is scheduled to go into production before the end of summer 2012.

The film’s release date was announced alongside Independence Day 3D and a Walking with Dinosaurs movie – which will arrive in 2013 – and the X-Men: First Class sequel, which is scheduled for release on July 18, 2014.
