‘The Lorax’ wins US box office with $70.7 million

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax has topped the US box office with $70.7 million.

The animated adaptation of the classic children’s book features Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Rob Riggle and Betty White voicing characters.

It tells the tale of a young boy who seeks out the story of the titular creature and his attempt to prevent the deforestation of his home.

Comedy-thriller Project X, produced by The Hangover director Todd Phillips, takes second place with $20.7 million.

The plot follows three friends who plan to gain popularity by throwing a party, a plan which quickly escalates out of their control.

Last week’s number one Act of Valor slips down to third place, taking $13.7 million, while multiple Oscar-winning movie The Artist has climbed back up the charts to tenth position, improving on last week’s number 13 and raking in a further $3.9 million.
