The executive producers of Blue Bloods have revealed that CBS originally wanted to alter the series.

Robin Green told the Futon Critic that network executives were keen to replicate the success of cop drama reboot Hawaii Five-0.

"In the very beginning they tried to shoehorn the show into being more of a procedural and dropping the family aspect," she explained. "[They wanted it to] be more like Hawaii Five-0 and a fast-paced procedural."

Co-producer Leonard Goldberg insisted that Blue Bloods will remain "a character drama".

"We are not a pure procedural," he argued. "We have a police story every week and there's a beginning, middle and end, but we are essentially a character drama and we rely on our writing and our cast... to carry our shows."

He added that Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 are like "two shows... from different planets".

"They're very successful at what they do and they're good at it," he admitted. "But it's light years from what we do."

Blue Bloods returned to CBS Friday night at 10/9c.
