Sean Bean has claimed that the violence in new HBO series Game of Thrones is "pretty awful".

The actor previously suggested that the adaptation of author George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels is "disturbing", while producer David Benioff also admitted that the fantasy drama contains graphic violence.

Bean recently told SFX: “Some of [the violence] is pretty awful. One of my friends gets stabbed in the eye, and I just stand and see that, then I have to fight this man.

"It just erupts out of nowhere. There’s just a flashpoint and it is just very messy. I think an audience will be very interested.”

The Lord of the Rings star added that his own character, Eddard 'Ned' Stark, has "a sense of duty, honour and loyalty"

"[He] is surrounded by backstabbers and betrayers, people who want to gain power, who want to gain the throne, and will do anything to achieve that," he explained.

Game of Thrones will launch in the US on April 17 on HBO. The show will air in April on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
