FX has announced the renewal of the American crime drama just a day before the debut of episode 5 of season 3. The series, which was co-created by the late John Singleton, has been a staple of FX’s programming since its premiere.

“Snowfall” is an account of the crack cocaine epidemic which swept Los Angeles in 1983, examining the impact of the drug’s arrival on both the people and the culture of the city. The story primarily follows four characters: Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), a 19-year-old drug dealer; Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), an undercover CIA agent; Lucia Villanueva (Emily Rios), a member of a powerful Mexican crime family; and Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), a Mexican luchador.

“‘Snowfall’ has continued its creative leap forward this season with the hard work and contributions of John Singleton and the brilliant performance of Damson Idris,” said Nick Grad, FX’s President of Original Programming, of the renewal. “We are grateful to Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Michael London, Trevor Engelson and Walter Mosley for honoring John’s legacy through their commitment to building on the artistic excellence of ‘Snowfall’ with a fourth season on FX.”

Throughout the show’s third season, “Snowfall” has averaged a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49, falling a bit behind the second season’s 0.4 live + same day rating. The drop-off between the third and second seasons has also been more pronounced than it was between the first and second. Nonetheless, the show has become a signature member of FX’s programming, and its renewal is not an incredible surprise.

“Snowfall” will be rejoining the network’s considerable roster alongside “American Horror Story,” “Fargo,” “Pose,” “Mayans M.C.,” “Mr. Inbetween,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “American Crime Story,” “Better Things,” and recently-renewed shows “Atlanta” and “Archer.”
