The news comes less than a month after “Lethal Weapon” returned on Fox for season 3, which was initially set to run for only 13 episodes, but will now run for a total of 15. While that is said to have been the network’s plan from the beginning, the news of the extension comes as a bit of a surprise, following Wayans’ sudden announcement last week that he would be “quitting” the show at the end of its original 13-episode run.

In an interview with Electronic Urban Report, Wayans announced that he was quitting the show due to the toll that it’s production schedule was taking on him, saying: “I’m a 58-year-old diabetic, and I’m working 16-hour days.”

The news of Wayans’ supposed impending exit came just a week after Fox had premiered the show’s latest season, which is the first to feature Wayans’ new co-star, Seann William Scott, who signed onto the show as a replacement for original star, Clayne Crawford, after Crawford was fired from the show at the end of its second season. Crawford’s departure came following several behind-the-scenes conflicts between he, Fox, and Wayans.

So while “Lethal Weapon” has been performing fairly well so far this year, averaging a steady 0.8 live + same day rating in adults 18-49, many assumed that the show losing the other half of its original duo, would make chances of a season 4 renewal slim at best.

However, Wayans and the show’s producers are said to have come to an agreement, which will entail adjustments to the production schedule to help him avoid fatigue, and providing him with special diabetic meals on set. Deadline is also reporting that, in addition to signing on for the pair of additional episodes, Wayans is (as of right now) leaving open the possibility of returning for a fourth season, should Fox choose to renew it.

“Lethal Weapon” airs every Tuesday night on Fox.
