AMC is (almost) doubling down on its series “Into the Badlands,” renewing the show for a third season and beefing up the episode count considerably

The martial-arts series starring Daniel Wu will have a 16-episode third season, debuting sometime in 2018. That’s up from 10 episodes this season and six for the show’s first run in 2015.

“‘Into the Badlands’ looks like nothing else on television, a literal high-wire act attracting passionate and dedicated fans by the millions,” AMC president Charlie Collier says in a statement. “Thanks to series creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, the terrific cast led by Daniel Wu, the amazing martial arts team guided by the incomparable Master Dee Dee and fight directors Stephen Fung and Andy Cheng, and everyone else involved who brings this thrill ride to the fans.”

“Into the Badlands” put up solid ratings for the start of Season 2 behind the final few episodes of “The Walking Dead,” then predictably fell off considerably after its lead-in ended for the season. Through six episodes it’s averaging a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.38 million viewers.

With three days of DVR playback, the show’s audience grows to 3.6 million viewers, which AMC says makes it the fourth most-watched drama on cable, behind “The Walking Dead,” “Fear the Walking Dead” and “American Horror Story.”

Whether AMC runs all 16 episodes of Season 3 consecutively, or splits the season a la “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead,” remains to be seen.
