The Star Wars spinoff topples four new releases

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story continues to dominate the US box office for the second weekend in a row.

Following its huge $155 million domestic debut last weekend, the Star Wars spinoff racked up an additional $64.4 million over the Christmas weekend. The total US gross for Rogue One is now $286.4 million.

Four new releases - Sing, Passengers, Why Him? and Assassin's Creed - were no match for Rogue One, but it was the family-friendly animated film Sing faring best in second place with $35.3 million.

Although a space epic starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt is many a moviegoer's dream, their new film Passengers didn't fare well in the box office - only earning $14.9 million for third place.

Those three were followed by James Franco's Why Him? bringing in $11 million at fourth place and Michael Fassbender's live-action adaptation of the Assassin's Creed video game series with $10.3 million in fifth place.

Last weekend's second place Moana slipped into sixth place with $7.4 million.

The animated film has been a hit for Disney as it has enjoyed three weekends in the number one spot after debuting on top with $56.6 million.

After expanding to more theaters, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis's drama Fences climbed up from number 25 to number 7 with $6.7 millions.

Rounding out the top ten spots were La La Land in eighth place with $5.7 million, Office Christmas Party in ninth place with $5.1 million and Collateral Beauty in tenth place with $4.3 million.
