Janney is now tied with 85-year-old Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant star Ed Asner for most individual Emmy wins.

While collecting the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Janney thanked Mom creator Chuck Lorre: "[Thanks for] creating such a deeply flawed character and immediately thinking of me to play her."

Janney later recognised co-star Anna Faris for being as "generous with a moment as you are with your heart".

"One serious thing: So many lives are touched by addiction and it is a privilege to work on a show that reminds us that there is hope," she concluded.

Janney previously earned four Emmys for her iconic role as White House press secretary CJ Cregg in The West Wing.

She's also won Emmy Awards for Mom and Masters of Sex.

Andy Samberg hosted the ceremony from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles tonight (September 19). Fox is airing live coverage of the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards.
