The horror anthology series will return for a 13-episode third instalment in the 2013 fall season, with production expected to start in the summer.

Creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are yet to reveal the synopsis for the third run, but it will be its own self-contained miniseries in a similar vein to the first season and the current American Horror Story: Asylum.

Jessica Lange and several of the show's other leading stars are expected to return as different characters, reports Deadline.

"With American Horror Story: Asylum, Ryan and Brad have raised the bar in every way from Murder House, the first American Horror Story miniseries," said FX president John Landgraf.

The second season finale will air on January 23, 2013 on FX. The second instalment has starred Adam Levine, Zachary Quinto, Joseph Fiennes, James Cromwell, Jenna Dewan and Chloe Sevigny among others.
