The political drama starred Grammer as Chicago mayor Tom Kane, who must negotiate the murky world of city politics while keeping his debilitating neurological disorder a secret.

"After much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with Boss," said Starz in a statement.

"We remain proud of this award-winning show, its exceptional cast and writers, and are grateful to Kelsey Grammer, [series creator] Farhad Safinia and our partners at Lionsgate TV."

However, Deadline reports that the cable network and Lionsgate TV are currently in talks to produce a two-hour TV movie to wrap up the show's unresolved storylines.

Boss consistently struggled to attract a sizeable audience - the show premiered with 0.66m viewers in October 2011, with the final episode pulling in 0.44m last month.

Starz ordered the show's second season in September 2011, before the first had even premiered.

Grammer won a Golden Globe for his lead performance in January 2012, suggesting that the awards win could help Boss find a larger viewership.
