Anne of Green Gables is to be adapted for a new television series. The classic 1908 children's novel - written by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery - charts the adventures of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl.
"Anne comes from a different background [in our new show]," producer Joan Lambur told The Hollywood Reporter.
"She's had to find it in herself to succeed and get along and make her way, and the while do so with dignity and with class. The goal is to create a new Anne for a modern-day and really present her in a more global perspective."
Canadian company Breakthrough Entertainment will produce the 13-part adaptation of Montgomery's novel, which has sold 50 million copies worldwide.
The new Anne of Green Gables will start shooting in summer 2013. The book and its sequels have previously been adapted for film, television and stage, while CTV's 2009 TV movie Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning created an original story for the character's later years.
