FX has renewed the crime drama for a third season just ahead of its second season finale. However, while the “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff will be continuing its run as part of FX’s extensive roster, co-creator and former showrunner Kurt Sutter will not be returning with it. Instead, co-creator Elgin James will be assuming the bulk of Sutter’s duties as the series moves forward.

“We’re happy to continue telling the story of ‘Mayans M.C.‘ with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner,” Nick Grad, President of Original Programming at FX Entertainment, said of the announcement. “Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make ‘Mayans M.C.’ with this incredible cast, crew and creative team.”

“Mayans M.C.” is set almost three years after the course of “Sons of Anarchy,” taking place in a town called Santo Padre on the border of California. The series follows Ezekiel Reyes (JD Pardo), nicknamed “EZ,” as he lives among the Mayans Motorcycle Club. As a member of the Mayans, EZ is seeking to reconcile with his estranged brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas) while he simultaneously attempts to discover the nature of the events surrounding his mother’s death. The cast also features Sara Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, and Richard Cabral.

In its first season, “Mayans M.C.” averaged a considerable 1.5 rating in Live+3 ratings in adults 18-49, drawing an average of about 3.64 million viewers per episode. Thus far in its second season, that has shifted to a 1.0 rating in adults 18-49 with 2.59 million viewers. Despite the decline between seasons, however, it still remains one of the strongest performers on TV, and putting aside internal drama, its renewal is not a massive surprise.
