There is no cause for skepticism when it comes to the future of “Evil”

CBS has renewed the supernatural drama series for a second season, in addition to giving back orders to a handful of shows from its current lineup. The series which will increase their runs include the comedies “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “Carol’s Second Act,” and “The Unicorn,” as well as legal drama “All Rise.” Despite the announcement, CBS did not divulge specific episode counts beyond declaring that each of the four series would receive a full-season order. ‘Evil,’ on the other hand, will air the rest of its 13 episode run, then begin its second year at some point in 2020-2021.

CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl addressed the renewals, saying “These terrific new series have attracted a passionate base of viewers and consistent ratings while delivering entertaining, inclusive and relevant storytelling every week. They’re off to strong starts and are still being discovered on the many catch-up and playback options available to our viewers today. We’re proud of this freshman class and excited about their potential to tell more great stories and further expand their audiences.”

‘Evil’ tells the story of a forensic psychologist whose skepticism is challenged when she finds herself allied with a priest and a technical contractor to investigate what appear to be supernatural incidents. The series stars Katja Herbers as Dr. Kristen Bouchard, the aforementioned skeptic, with Mike Colter as David Acosta, the priest, and Aasif Mandvi as Ben Shroff, the contractor. The first two episodes of ‘Evil’ scored an average of 1.3 in Live+7 ratings in adults 18-49, drawing 7.57 million viewers. This makes its renewal something of a surprise, considering that the Cancel Bear had it down as “likely to be canceled by May 2020.”

“All Rise” is also considered likely to be axed, but the Cancel Bear was, however, more optimistic about the other series on the list. “Carol’s Second Act” is a “tossup,” while both “The Unicorn” and “Bob Hearts Abishola” are considered likely renewals. This news moves the needle closer for all four in favor towards renewal, although if the survival of “Evil” shows anything, it’s how surprising the landscape of primetime television can be.
