In a year when it has been saying goodbye to several veteran titles, HBO has decided to stick with another one of its freshman shows for another year
Announced today, the cable network has officially renewed “The Righteous Gemstones” for a second season. The announcement comes just a few weeks into the show’s freshman run, with its season one finale set to air in October.
Created by Danny McBride, “The Righteous Gemstones” follows the inner workings of a world-famous televangelist family, which has maintained a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work. The show’s cast includes McBride, John Goodman, Adam Devine, Cassidy Freeman, Edi Patterson, Kelton DuMont, Skyler Gisondo, and more.
“Danny, Jody and David are among our favorite collaborators, and we’re thrilled that their take on a family comedy has been met with such enthusiasm,” said Amy Gravitt, Executive VP of HBO Programming. “We cannot wait to share the next steps in the Gemstone family’s epic journey. Hallelujah!”
Just four episodes into its run, “The Righteous Gemstones” has been averaging a 0.2 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 with 572,000 viewers, almost even with the kind of numbers that its lead-in, “Succession,” has been averaging in its second season.
The show’s renewal also comes after HBO has already said goodbye to a few of its biggest veteran titles this year, including “Game of Thrones” and “Veep,” while other shows like “Ballers” and “Silicon Valley” are set to end after their current/upcoming seasons.
That puts “The Righteous Gemstones” in the same batch of titles leading HBO into its latest programming phase, along with the recently-renewed “Euphoria,” “Succession,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “Los Espookys,” and others.
