“Atlanta’s” return date may still be a mystery, but FX is still just as confident in the series as it has ever been

Announced this morning, FX has officially handed out an early season 4 renewal for the Donald Glover-led dramedy. Production on the show’s third and fourth seasons, both of which will run for eight episodes and will film back-to-back, is reportedly set to begin sometime next spring.

The renewal, which was announced during the network’s appearance at the summer TCA press tour today, comes over a year after “Atlanta” wrapped up its second season. Since then, the show’s return date has remained a constant mystery, despite having been renewed for a third season shortly after its season 2 finale.

“What more can be said about ‘Atlanta’ than the critical acclaim and accolades that Donald, Paul, Dianne, Stephen, and Hiro have earned for two exceptional seasons of what is clearly one of the best shows on television,” said by FX Entertainment President, Eric Schrier. “This group of collaborators and cast have created one of the most original, innovative stories of this generation and we are proud to be their partners.”

While this announcement does little to actually clarify when “Atlanta” will be returning with new episodes, it’s still another strong showing of support for the show’s creative team by FX. With the next two seasons filming back-to-back as well, FX and Glover will likely be able avoid repeating the same kind of prolonged hiatus that the show has been stuck in since the conclusion of its second season.

In its second season, “Atlanta” averaged a solid 0.3 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 and 639,000 viewers on FX, down just a little from its first season’s 0.4 and 888,000 viewer averages.
