Hulu has officially renewed “The Handmaid’s Tale” for a fourth season today. The news comes not only 10 episodes into the show’s current, third season, but also just a little over a week after the series garnered 11 nominations in this year’s primetime Emmy awards. The series received those nominations too, despite having only 3 episodes eligible, and therefore, only being able to compete for individual achievement awards.

Created by Bruce Miller, and based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, “The Handmaid’s Tale” takes place in a dystopian future version of America – renamed Gilead – where the few remaining fertile women are forced to live in sexual servitude as “handmaids,” as part of a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world.

Hulu, like all other streaming platforms, doesn’t release any official viewership numbers or statistics for its original series, which always makes knowing the actual success of one of its shows impossible. Since its debut though, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been an instant pop culture hit, and has continued to receive strong critical acclaim over the years.

Now, the series, which has won 11 primetime Emmys throughout its first two seasons (including one for outstanding drama series in 2017), will get to continue exploring its own dystopian vision of the future for at least another season.
