CBS has revealed that the show’s already announced sixth season will also be its last. A shortened season, consisting of 10 episodes, will air this fall and will wrap up “Madam Secretary’s” time on the network.

The news comes the same morning that CBS revealed its full fall 2019 programming schedule.

The announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering “Madam Secretary’s” performance in the ratings this past season. Averaging just a 0.6 live + same day rating among adults 18-49, it was the network’s third-lowest-rated title of the season, beating only “The Red Line” and “Ransom.”

Kept alive by its syndication and streaming deals, it was only a matter of time before CBS decided to put an end to “Madam Secretary.” Fortunately, with this announcement today, fans of the series will at least have time to prepare themselves for its conclusion, and will be able to watch the upcoming season with the knowledge that it’s the end.

“Madam Secretary” isn’t the only drama that CBS will be bringing to an end in the 2019-20 season either. “Criminal Minds” is similarly set to air a shortened final season next year, though “Criminal Minds” is being held for the network’s midseason schedule, while “Madam Secretary” will be wrapping up in the fall.
