NBC has officially renewed the freshman medical drama for a second season this afternoon, making it the network’s first rookie series of the season to get a season 2 order. It is also now the third overall NBC series confirmed to be returning for the 2019-20 season, joining the previously-renewed “Will & Grace” and “The Good Place.”

Created by David Schulner, the series follows a new medical director, as he breaks all the rules in order to try and heal the fractured system at America’s oldest public hospital. It stars Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine, Anupam Kher, and more.

“We’ve been so excited to see how much audiences have embraced Dr. Max Goodwin and all the characters that make ‘New Amsterdam’ such an incredibly compelling medical series,” said Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming at NBC Entertainment. “Congratulations to [executive producers] David Schulner, Peter Horton, our writers and an amazing cast and crew who have brought these stories to life.”

“New Amsterdam” has been a considerably strong performer for NBC throughout its first season, airing immediately after “This is Us” on Tuesday nights to usually win the 10 p.m. hour. It’s currently averaging a 1.3 Live + Same Day rating among adults 18-49 with 6.42 million viewers, making it NBC’s fourth-highest-rated scripted series of the season so far.

“New Amsterdam” airs Tuesday nights on NBC.
