‘Vikings’ set to end with sixth season on History

“Vikings” is coming to an end



First reported by Deadline, the History Channel has officially announced that the sixth season of the network’s veteran drama, “Vikings,” will be the show’s last. The final season is set to premiere sometime later this year and will air throughout the 2019-20 TV season.

The news comes as the series is currently working through the back half of its fifth season, with its season finale set to air at the end of January. Production on the show’s sixth season has reportedly already wrapped.

Deadline is also reporting that with “Vikings” now coming to an end, History is currently in talks with the show’s creator, Michael Hirst, and studio MGM Television, on a possible followup series to the “Vikings” story. Should the followup be greenlit, then Hirst (who has written every episode of “Vikings”) will be teaming up with writer Jeb Stuart (“Die Hard,” “The Fugitive”) on it.

The news of “Vikings” being brought to an end comes almost six years after it made its premiere on the network as the History Channel’s first original, ongoing scripted series. Since then, it has remained a consistently strong ratings performer for the network, despite suffering some expected season-to-season drops.

Throughout its fifth season, the show has been averaging a 0.5 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 and 1.96 million viewers, down slightly from its fourth season’s 0.7 and 2.27 million viewer averages.

New episodes of “Vikings” currently air every Wednesday night on History.
