Announced this morning, the network has officially ordered seven additional episodes from the Nathan Fillion-led freshman police procedural, bringing its first season total to 20 episodes. The news comes less than a month after the drama made its premiere on the network.

Created by Alexi Hawley (“Castle”), the series follows John Nolan (Fillion), a forty-year-old man who moves from his comfortable, small town life to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of being a police officer for the LAPD. Along with Fillion, the series stars Alyssa Diaz, Eric Winter, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Mercedes Mason, Melissa O’Neil, Afton Williamson, and more.

“The Rookie” is now one of several freshman ABC titles to have received additional episode orders so far this season. “A Million Little Things” and “The Conners” were both picked up for additional episodes, and “Single Parents” was picked up for a full first season as well.

While it’s far from being ABC’s highest-rated freshman title this fall, the network has experienced some year-to-year improvements in its 10 p.m. Tuesday night time slot with “The Rookie.” The series has been averaging a 0.9 live + same day rating in adults 18-49 with 4.83 million viewers, up from what “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” was averaging (0.7, 2.70 million) in the same time slot last season.
