The news comes just three weeks after the new medical drama made its premiere on the network at the start of the 2018-19 TV season. It is the first new TV series of the season to receive a full-season order.

Created by David Schulner, the series follows the new (and brilliant) medical director at America’s oldest public hospital, who is intent on disrupting the status quo and breathing new life into the understaffed, underfunded, and underappreciated hospital. The show’s ensemble includes Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, Lisa O’Hare, Freema Agyeman, Tyler Labine, and more.

“It’s thrilling to come out of the gate this season with a series that has resonated so well with audiences. The show hits the sweet spot of the NBC brand — positivity, emotion and incredible storytelling,” said Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted programming at NBC Entertainment. “A huge thank you to our fantastic cast, executive producers, Universal Television and everyone who has worked so hard in getting the show off to such a terrific start.”

“New Amsterdam” has been off to a good ratings start on NBC, averaging a solid 1.6 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demo with 7.64 million viewers. It is, currently, the second-highest rated new series of the fall, behind only “Manifest,” another freshman NBC title.
