The network has announced this afternoon that the David Simon-created period drama will return for a third and final season next year. The news comes almost two weeks after “The Deuce” returned for its second season on the network, with its third episode set to premiere Sunday night.

On Twitter, Simon commented on the news with the following:

“We’re always conjuring the last scene before we write the first. So much the better when we work for people who allow us to consistently plan, arc and execute as intended. Thanks, HBO, for the third and final season renewal and the chance for The Deuce to tell its full story.”

Co-created by Simon and George Pelecanos, “The Deuce” focuses on the seedy reality of 1970s New York City, when rampant levels of prostitution eventually led to the rise and legalization of the porn industry. Each season of the show takes place during a slightly different time period, with the first set in 1971, the current second season set in 1977, and the third said to take place sometime in the early 1980s. The series’ ensemble includes Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Franco (in two roles), Dominique Fishback, Gary Carr, Daniel Sauli, and more.

The news comes as little surprise, with Simon and Pelecanos having said from the very start of the series that it would only run for three seasons.

Never a huge ratings hit for the network, since its return this year “The Deuce” has been averaging a low 0.2 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demo with 621,000 viewers – down from the 0.3 and 879,000 averages of its first season last year.

New episodes of “The Deuce” air every Sunday night on HBO.
