Months after ABC originally canceled it near the end of its second season, the streaming service has officially renewed “Designated Survivor” for a third season. The Kiefer Sutherland-led series will see Neal Baer replacing Keith Eisner as showrunner for the series’ new 10-episode season. Baer now marks the show’s fifth overall showrunner.

The next season will reportedly follow Sutherland’s President Kirkman as he deals with the issues of today, including the evolving world of political campaigning, smear tactics, fake news, and more. It will be returning as a Netflix Original, with ABC no longer involved as a producer.

As has been previously reported, ABC canceled “Designated Survivor” just as the series was finishing off its second season on the network, as a result of both the show’s significant ratings decline and constant behind-the-scenes creative changes (the show had four different showrunners throughout its two-season run).

The show experienced a 42 percent decline in live + same day ratings from its first season to its second (1.3 average L+SD rating vs. 0.7 average L+SD), but did perform notably well in delayed viewing, which led many fans to question ABC’s decision to cancel it.

“Timely and gripping, ‘Designated Survivor’ has quickened the pulses of our Netflix members outside the U.S. and Canada in its first two seasons,” Netflix’s VP of Content, Bela Bajaria, said. “The international audience for the show drove our interest to bring the show to the world as a Netflix original for its third season and we are excited to bring the first two seasons to our U.S. and Canadian members as well.”

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season three of Designated Survivor with Netflix, eOne and Neal Baer,” added Sutherland. “I believe this format will allow us to continue to delve deeply into storylines and issues concerning the American electorate that were not previously possible.”

“Designated Survivor” will return with its third season on Netflix sometime in 2019.
