Announced this morning by the network, OWN has officially renewed “Queen Sugar” for a fourth season, set to air on the network next year. The news comes just a few weeks before the critically-acclaimed original series is set to air its season 3 finale. Anthony Sparks, a co-executive producer and veteran writer for the series, will reportedly take the helm as the series’ new showrunner for its fourth season.

Created by Ava DuVernay and based on the book of the same name by Natalie Baszile, “Queen Sugar” focuses on the lives of three siblings, all of whom move to Louisiana to claim an inheritance from their recently departed father – an 800-acre sugarcane farm. The series, which has been a consistent critical darling ever since its premiere in 2016, stars Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, Omar J. Dorsey, and more.

“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today,” said OWN President Erik Logan. “We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”

Over halfway into its third season, “Queen Sugar” has been averaging a 0.3 live + same day rating so far this year, with 1.12 million viewers. This is down just slightly from the 0.4 average of its second season in 2017, which in turn, had also experienced a one-tenth drop from its first season’s 0.5 average.

The third season finale of “Queen Sugar” will air on OWN on Aug. 22.
